Early Riser
How many times have we heard about being an early riser to become more successful, and how often do we just brush it off with things like “how could an extra hour help”, “I wouldn’t get any productive work done anyway at that time of morning” and other such comments. Well after reading about and hearing about early rising, I read an article by Steve Pavlina about early rising and not having it affect you at the end of the day and for some reason this time it stuck, so along with reading Steve’s article I also needed to look at some physical activity and get back to meditation as I’d been snowed under with a few things over the last few years (study) and I recognised that I needed to make some changes, but I was finding I had no extra time in the evenings (Study, Family, Meal time, bath time for daughter, clean-up after daughter goes to bed) so I needed to find some time and the morning seemed to be the answer. So I started getting up much earlier to get some ‘me’ time, the getting up part was basically setting the alarm earlier but I also cheated and set the clock forward as well for that little bit of extra incentive to get up so I’m getting up around 5:15-5:20am, and I’ve found it is having no effect on my mental or physical state at the end of the day, possibly it is the activities I am undertaking that may be the reason for no adverse affects (walking, weights, meditation) but initially I found by getting up early and doing something, even if I’m not fully alert I was getting that morning ‘slowness’ out of the way, but as I’ve become used to getting up early I’m starting to find I am fully alert and I’m starting to get even more done, previously the mornings were a rush around getting ready for work and having breakfast, I only had time to sort myself out which was frustrating my wife to no end as she had to dodge around me and if our daughter woke up a little earlier her entire day was ruined, but now even though I start getting my breakfast and getting ready at the same time (6:00am) I find I’m organised earlier and I have time to get her a coffee and breakfast, and even get some breakfast into our daughter while my wife has a shower before I need to get to work, once again I believe this is because I already have my days momentum up and going. I’m now considering getting up earlier, as getting up at 5:15am by the time I get changed and take care of other morning duties, I find I don’t get going on my extra routines until 5:30-5:35AM. And I’ve reached the point I would like to up my routine level by either extending it or increasing the intensity, but increasing intensity I would like cool down time before I return to my normal getting ready for work routine. At the same time I’d also like to do other things, (get some work done, check e-mails, type something I thought of up into an article, work on my goals/plans) looks like I've got some working out still to do :-) The one thing I must consider is my wife and daughter that my early movements do not wake them, my wife may choose to try early rising one day, but not at the moment, she does not handle lack of sleep very well, I guess I had an advantage trying out the early rising having done 6 years of shift work while training and competing in national level martial arts tournaments, I learnt how to keep going even when I was exhausted, and to keep calm when my emotional state was on edge, and when I got the chance catch-up on sleep i.e. “the cleaning can wait”, “I’ll do that job when I wake” type of thing instead of worrying about a job not done, there is always tomorrow, I must admit I did take this a little too far sometimes :-) So now to get up even earlier I intend to look at methods of waking up that do not require the alarm….. Some of this goes against some of what Steve Pavlina had in his article, but as Steve often says in his articles, “see what works for you”
