Beer the cause of and solution to all of life's problems
Before I start, I must make very clear, I do not condone the excessive consumption or frequent consumption of alcohol for any reason, and the observations below are just that observations!! Simpson's Quote ""Beer the cause of and solution to all of life's problems" Interesting quote this one, I'd forgotten about it until I saw the end of a Simpsons episode the other night. I must admit it's very close to the truth, but can be interpreted in a few ways that I can see It can be the cause of a lot of problems when consumed, especially if in the wrong mind set (angry, frustrated, etc), and of course once enough has been consumed any problems caused by excessive drinking go away (temporarily) which is obviously the surface meaning of this quote. But even when in a negative mood, drinking can have a positive effect for example having a few drinks to unwind after a stressful day or week, where the initial mood is negative, having a couple of drinks can turn a 'bad day' around. Many will say this is only a temporary fix, and the stress and negativity will just return the next day possibly worse than before, I must disagree with this in some situations, if the cause of the stress and negativity has been dealt with and only the after effects remain, the drinks can assist to remove the remaining negative emotions that have been created, or if the source of stress is still there but not overwhelming and the alcohol is not consumed to excess can help to stop ""bringing home your work problems"" These positive effects are most likely not directly related to the consumption of alcohol, but more a learned reponse, created by the temporary effect of alcohol consumption in the past, where everything feels better after drinking (usually in excess), so having a small amount of alcohol in a familar comfortable environment (preferably with a friend or friends) will bring back memories of the previous alcohol induced state that gave a temporary respite from the stresses of life (probably with negative after effects, but we tend to forget those), and remove (without the need to consume an excess of alcohol) the negative emotions and tensions being held in our minds. It must be noted that in many (most) people this can lead to an addiction or habit of consuming alcohol much more regularly and in excessive quantities, especially if it not done conciously, as ""it made things so much better yesterday, if I have some now it will be the same"". And of course then there is the ""happy drinking"" when drinking in a social environment and the consumption of alcohol complements a persons already positive mood, I must admit I've had many good evenings, having a nice meal with friends and consuming several bottles of red wine while having interesting conversations. On the negative side again is the escapism through drinking to excess to forget you problems, this is not a good way to be, it may cause social problems, health problems and of course safety problem. One interesting situation occurred to me a few years ago, and I cannot explain it. I sometimes joke with people ""Calculus makes sense after 4 bottles of beer but makes no sense after 8"", this came from a time when I was studying Engineering Mathematics and was struggling with it and while away from home one day, sitting in a motel room, I was trying to catch up on some study while having a few drinks, and after the 4th bottle (375ml) of beer suddenly it all made sense better that I had ever understood it before, and I made great advances into my assignment, but after consuming a few more beers, it became a blur again, and I could not make sense of it again. But the advances I made that night enabled me to sucessfully complete the subject and I ended up passing with a credit on a subject I had a lot of trouble with. I have no idea why this occurred, and I've had a couple of similar incidents since but none to that extent, but my normal experience with any amount of alcohol over 1 drink is that it lowers my mental abilities. ----------------------------------------------------------- All of these examples and observations can create quite a heated discussion about the good and bad of alcohol consumption, and that is not what I'm actually trying to generate in this article, as I said at the begining these are observations from my own experiences and observations of others. but for the record my feelings/status on the subject of alcohol consumption I enjoy a few drinks (especially single malt scotch and of course my own beer) I do drink to 'un-wind' after a big day/week when I feel I need it, I have also in the past, drank to the point of coming very close to becoming an alcoholic so I'm well aware of the addictive nature of alcohol But with all of this I now watch very carefully the frequency and amount I consume and consider my health and the effect on my fitness and adjust to suit my lifestyle. By doing this I feel I can gain the maximum benefit from my work on my Personal development, without losing something I enjoy (one of the things I find with personal development is you must still enjoy your life), as long as the consumption does not affect My Health My Mental abilities, (in the medium and long term) My Relationships My Physical Fitness So my advice on this subject: Enjoy a drink, just be aware what it is doing to you and your life and adjust according to the effects on you, do not compare yourself to others with regard to the addictiveness and effects of alcohol. and on that note Cheers!!!
